Mary,

If the school you're concerned about is located in California, this is where you'd complain:
http://www.bppve.ca.gov/

Thank you.

Continental Academy is NO LONGER a regionally accredited high school after January 2010. It means that if you have graduated from this school after it lost its accreditation in January 2010, you will NOT be able to continue your education at a college that is regionally accredited. All state colleges, universities, and almost all private universities in US are regionally accredited. These institutions will ONLY accept graduates from regionally accredited high schools. While Continental is not a diploma mill (where you get a diploma after paying a fee) the education you get at Continental is worthless as no college will accept it. If you graduated before end of January 2010, a diploma from Continental would be sufficient as it had accreditation until end of January.

I graduated in May 2010 and I highly recommend this school. With Continental Academy, I was able to continue my education and get a better job. Please be aware that a high school diploma is not enough to be accepted into college. The applicant must meet the additional entrance requirements such as having a sufficient score on the SAT or ACT exam. Every year, our public high schools in Texas award high school diplomas to hundreds of students who are not accepted into college because they cannot meet the additional entrance requirements of the college. Being accepted by a college is a privilege, not a right.

Yes, the majority of colleges are regionally accredited however, NOT every student attending college graduated from a regionally accredited high school. The majority of private high schools in the United States are NOT regionally accredited by choice. Regional accreditation agencies are private companies (not government agencies) and they are ONLY recognized for the accreditation of colleges and universities – NOT high schools. Proof of this fact can be seen below from the web site of the U.S. Department of Education:

http://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/accreditation_pg2.html#U.S.

Note: The U.S. Department of Education does not have the authority to accredit private or public elementary or secondary schools, and the Department does not recognize accrediting bodies for the accreditation of private or public elementary and secondary schools. However, the U.S. Department of Education does recognize accrediting bodies for the accreditation of institutions of higher (postsecondary) education. If an accrediting body which is recognized by the Department for higher education also accredits elementary and secondary schools, the Department's recognition applies ONLY to the agency's accreditation of postsecondary institutions.

Accreditation does not provide automatic acceptance by an institution of credit earned at another institution, nor does it give assurance of acceptance of graduates by employers. Acceptance of students or graduates is always the prerogative of the receiving institution or employer.

If you plan on attending college, you MUST be aware of all of the admissions requirements of the college of your choice. The vast majority of colleges have specific admissions requirements for homeschoolers (students who earned their high school diploma from a home study program). YES, you can be accepted into college however, you have to meet all of the college’s admissions requirements.

I can attest to the fact that Continental Academy is not a scam. My son graduated from their Home School Program in 2010. Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states. What is a scam is ultimate Medical Academy which is a for profit school. The for profit school industry is being investigated by the federal government for federal financial aid fraud and illegal recruitment practices which you can search for on www.google.com and Senator Tom Harkin’s office is spearheading this issue. Students are informed that they will be receiving financial aid which is truly a government loan. The majority of students end up with $30,000 to $60,000 in debt and credits that no real college or university will accept.

The best option for students is to earn their high school diploma from their local public high school which is free. However, if that cannot happen for whatever reason and they graduated from a home study high school, the best option for them is to continue their education at a local community college. The local community college is a state community college whereby you are guaranteed that the credits you earn will be able to be transferred to the college or university of your choice. In most cases, the credits you earn at a for profit college, will not be accepted by a state college or state university.
